5 WAYS TO CULTIVATE A READING HABIT AS A STUDENT IN 2025
Sharon had always wanted to top her class since she was in basic school. She struggled to balance and manage her time to read for years. It has always been a fight between her play time and reading time but she always gives in to her playtime while neglecting her passion to top her class. She felt she could always read when she had a test or examination.
She had grown with this mentally for year and still struggling to get good grades. Yes! She dedicated herself to reading when it is week to her examination or few days left but it still wasn’t enough to boost her grades. All she needed was a good reading habit and time management that can push her to the top of her class.

In 2025, we have seen technology taking over and evolving while our schedule get more busier. Cultivating a reading habit can be very difficult and challenging especially for a student who is jumping from one assignment to the other, trying to attend classes, extra curriculum activities and even exams. But do you know reading regularly is one of the strongest way to maintain excellence, enhance knowledge, unwind and even sharpen one’s critical thinking?
A good reading habit will always stand in for you no matter what. You can never be stranded academically if you have a good reading habit.

1. Set realistic goal: A saying goes thus, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” so also is a reading habit. You can’t build it all up in a day. Start small and build capacity. Instead of aiming to finish 300 pages of that your textbook in a day or in one sitting, why not set time to read at least 20 pages for just 10 to 20 minutes per day? So, overtime and with your consistency, this will naturally grow to become an habit.
3. Choose books you have interest in: Make sure you choose books that excites you. Reading doesn’t have to be your school notes only. You can develop a reading habits by reading novels that excites you, novels that makes you stay glued to it, whether it’s drama, prose, fantasy, self help, biographies or even graphic novels. When you enjoy reading them it will be so easier to make reading a regular part of your life activities.
4. Embrace Technology: You know we are now in the age of technology and Ai right? And in 2025, audio books and ebooks are now made accessible than before. Platforms like Selar, Kindle and other platforms or local library apps makes it easy to carry an entire library in your pocket. Just make sure you leverage on them, make good use of them. Listen to audiobooks if written ones doesn’t work for you or read digital books on your phone when you have downtime. By doing this, you are turning idle moments to productive ones.
5. Have an accountability partner: This is it! Do you know sometimes it is easier to stick to an habit if there is someone keeping you accountable and even putting you through? Yes! It works so well! Partner with a friend, a senior colleague in school, your parents or siblings, family members, or your class mate who wants to build a reading habit too or who is willing to help keep you accountable. Discuss your progress with this person, share clear goals, even exchange books recommendations. Guess what? You can even turn it to a reading challenge with that same person, something like “who read the most pages in a month or who can finish a book first”. This will help a lot.
